Megaria Halim, D.M.A., M.Mus., B.A. (Hons.)

Megaria is a highly sought-after pianist with international performance experience. She has staged well-received performances at the Singapore Airlines theatre at Lasalle College of the Arts, and at Uniplaza Building in Medan, Indonesia. In 2023, Megaria was featured in the Young Artist Overture organized by New Music Concert (Toronto, Canada). She also performed with HATCH at Toronto Summer Music Festival, BIGLAKE Festival in Prince Edward County, and Chamberfest in Ottawa, In Winter 2024, Megaria was a Banff musician in residence. Being a champion for women and other historically underrepresented artists, Megaria has curated and performed in several recitals featuring women composers, with women performers, on themes surrounding womanhood. In 2025, Megaria participated in soundSCAPE in Switzerland, premiering works by young composers. Megaria also performed in several recitals on Prince Edward Island in Canada, including a concert for two pianos with UPEI piano professor, Magdalena von Eccher, and “Archipelagic Voices: Contemporary Music by Southeast Asian Composers” as part of the Contemporary Music Festival at UPEI in 2026. Being very interested in how the human mind works as one performs and listens to music, Megaria also collaborates closely with a music psychologist in research-creation. Together, they have presented several lecture recitals, bringing the world of classical music performance closer to the audience.

To Megaria, sharing music is one of the biggest things she is passionate about. Both teaching and performance offer her a unique and precious way of sharing music with others. As a performer, she is given this privilege to serve as a bridge between the composer and the audience. At the same time, through the re-creation and re-interpretation of the works, she is able to communicate certain intents and ideas to others. Having opportunities to explore different types of music ranging from the classical repertoire to contemporary compositions, she realized that the various ways through which composers and performers convey their artistic intent is not limited to just the melodies, harmonies, or other conventional musical structures. In fact, ways of communicating musical intent could exist even in aspects not restricted to sounds. Therefore, she is very excited about exploring and experimenting with the different ways in which various sounds, timbre and gestures are being used in the compositional and performance processes. Having an interest in both traditional and contemporary, solo, and chamber repertoires, she has been exploring various repertoires from across different periods and styles. She is especially keen on works by contemporary composers and has regularly collaborated with and performed works by living composers. Megaria hopes to continue working with more living composers in understanding their artistic intent and to collaborate with different artists in the process of bringing a new musical work to life.

Megaria also has a strong interest in musical theatre and has been involved in a number of theatrical productions worldwide. Working in musical theatre offers a distinctly different and exciting collaborative experience, combining music with storytelling, drama, movement, and performance. Each production brings together artists from a variety of disciplines, creating a dynamic and highly collaborative environment. Megaria particularly enjoys the energy and sense of community that musical theatre fosters. Whether working with singers, actors, directors, or other musicians, Megaria values the opportunity to contribute to a shared artistic vision and to help bring a production to life. Her experience in musical theatre has further enriched her approach as a musician and collaborator, reinforcing the importance of listening, flexibility, communication, and responsiveness in every performance.

Megaria graduated with a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) and Masters of Music (MMus) from University of Western Ontario, Canada. Before moving to Canada for her graduate studies, she attended Lasalle College of the Arts and graduated with First Class Honours.
